The birth of Jesus Christ took place within a concrete historical setting, marked by an imperial decree issued by Emperor Augustus ordering a census of the entire territory. Joseph and Mary, who was expecting a child, traveled about 140 kilometers to Bethlehem, the city of David, in order to be registered. Finding no place to stay, Jesus was laid in a manger.

The good news of the Savior’s birth was first announced by angels to shepherds—people who were socially despised and not even permitted to give testimony in court. A multitude of the heavenly host praised God, saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors.”

In this way, God revealed that he walks with those who are in lowly circumstances, and made known that this child is the one who would renew the world and bring true peace. It is written that Mary treasured all these things in her heart and pondered them deeply.
